Basalt Columns! – Another Great and Unusual Gift by Mother Nature! Another great and unusual gift by Mother Nature!
In the Canaries isles there are formations of this type. On cooling, the thick lava flows made at a vertical angle to the direction of the air currents, producing a strange-looking geometric figure.
This is the process that generated the basaltic columns of regular hexagonal shape and an almost artificial perfection, these columns are of great importance for scientific researches. Among the most famous are the “Giant’s Causeway” in Ireland and the “Devil’s Tower” in the U.S., but not detract from “The Bodies” on the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands.
These types of rocks also attract alot of tourism.
Basalt is an extrusive volcanic rock. It consists mostly of pyroxene and olivine, with a high content of iron and lesser amounts of feldspar and quartz.
