Mel: Me? *chuck* No, NOT ME. Thanks.

Depend on where they came from. There are a few common problems that hinder them from running the office:

1. NO SUPPORT: Tired of being criticized by someone else in relating to one's skill and/or talent.
2. NO TEAM: Afraid to run an organization with no help or no good team players are available out there.
3. NO LITERACY SKILL: One who is unable to read or writing in English. Require to communicate with other officers and community participants.
and
4. NO PAID JOB: Volunteer means drive to the meeting, take some time to make a plan, be there at any event, etc.

Solution:
Officers always do well with support from a long time members of an organization. Support is a KEY and it will give officers a great assurance in their work. A long time members need to say, "Whoever runs the office, I WILL BE THERE FOR YOU!" And you can say because of support, it will improve many areas of their skills such as Leadership skill, communication skill, ability to build a team, go on.

Whoever criticizes officer must have a solution for any kind of problems within an organization. Or one doesn't have a solution for that certain problem, go and see one of officers. That way it will improve the image of its organization. I think its work.

If one wants to run the office but has no literacy skill, find another volunteer. One condition: COMMITMENT is important and one must write down with his/her thoughts and then email to volunteer who can correct them in english.

SUGGESTION: Create a new incentive program for officers. i.e. Anyone who wants to run the office should treat as an important person and compensate them for their driving time like 32 cents per mile, free admission for any event, or 2 nights at a 5 stars hotel in every two years. (Its best incentive for someone who wants to run the office). (Some organizations have similar policy for their officers).

Bottomline: If you are good at leadership and you are unable to run the office, tell them that you will be there for them, be there for them, be there for them. It's best encouragement and it will strengthen anyone within their organization. :-)

(I have been through and I learned a lot from one organization with an excellent team players. That organization went very well. I just want to share with you. Don't discourage and be defeated... if you love that organization, keep going and let them know you are there for them.)

Peace,
Mel

Sean: Trudy,

It is a tragedy many of us decided not to contribute our time for the community's sake. Volunteering is one of the biggest contributions to the longevity of the community organizations.

Lot people are struggling with their living hood in their community. There are so many factors which hindered them from contributing their free times for the community organization’s sake. For example, one of the factors is occupation. They need to work in order to support themselves, feed their families, etc. Due of our cost of living in many cities put us through the quite difficult times.

I can list you long many factors which hinder them to volunteer their duties for their organizations they participate. The bottom line is we need to educate them this. “No volunteers, no organizations.”

Once their organizations fall apart, they will have no where to go to. I have seen many organizations die. I’ve seen many people who encourage youths to become the leaders of tomorrow feeling frustrated. Our youths apparently do not have the interests to lead our organizations in our community. Yet, we cannot force them (youths) to lead the organizations.

There are few people who continues taking up so many positions in various organizations to enhance their community for future. The roles these people took are taking a great toll in their personal affairs. Where is the justice?

Also, bartering is one of the biggest factor in the contributing their times for the organizations in their community. Everyone expects to get something out from their volunteer contributions. We need to learn to do the volunteering and expect nothing in return.

As I quote from an officer in an organization nearby here, “This organization cannot end. I will continue working as an officer until someone takes over my position. Even I will continue being as an officer until I die!” She said it very eloquently. She wants to see her organization to last. Scary thought? Isn’t it?

I cannot speak for anyone else, but myself. I will continue doing my community services until I die! Hope you all can join our crusade! For the better quality lives of our DEAF community!

-Sean
Currently occupies officer positions in many different organizations…

Diana: Trudy, just curious here...where is this apathy coming from? I have some ideas myself.
