Kevin: Thanks for sharing your experience. It's a valuable wake-up call, and we could definitely do more to coordinate emergency services in my community. We have a larger than average deaf presence due to a deaf services employer here, and we're in the middle of a hurricane corridor. We're probably more emergency-minded than many places because of the annual hurricane season, but like everywhere else, we've mostly abandoned our TTYs for videophones, pagers and Net access. We need to think about how that affects us when we need services fast and prepare before it happens.

Phil: Trudy,
This is a wonderful article, and I'll be working on making the same kinds of inroads in my community as you have done. I've often wondered what would happen in my community, should a disaster happen when I was home alone. I'm not so sure I would be prepared at this point, however, you've given some excellent insight into what I can do to make things better.
Thanks for the article.
