David: Excellent article!
V.O.I.C.E., Inc, a non-profit agency providing services to Deaf individuals in Michigan, has utilized a similar approach to obtain long-term employment for our Deaf customers. Our Director, Tammy Scholl (herself Deaf since birth) has placed much emphasis on creating good employment matches rather than just "finding a job".
We work with the State of Michigan to provide 2 week or longer "On-The-Job Training" positions wherein an individual can learn the job hands-on and get a feel for the corporate culture, find supportive co-workers, and break down the stereotyped image that Deaf individuals are "disabled".
