Trudy (author): Keith - good to see your name again.
Here's what Joy Hern-Guzman e-mailed on 01/22/08 regarding NCSD in Morganton:
Hope this helps.

Trudy (author): Michele, I also found it surprising that none of the people I interviewed for this article mentioned discrimination. I think it's probably the gorilla (or elephant or whatever animal you prefer) in the room that nobody can ignore but nobody wants to mention, either. Granted, it doesn't happen at all schools, but it definitely is a factor at some schools.

Michele: Agree with Kevin...great article! :-)
My only feedback is that your article did not mention that discrimination has to be one of the factors in why schools have such low numbers of Deaf people on their employment rolls.
I mean, Gallaudet, NTID, CSUN are certainly graduating a fair number of Deaf graduates with Education degrees/teaching credentials every year.
Yet, where do all these graduates go? Certainly they don't end up working in these schools, even though many of them do receive internships at these schools and apply for permanent positions and all that.
Many schools are willing to hire Deaf people in dormitory positions, but not as teachers or administrators. That mindset needs to change.

Kevin: Trudy, this is an OUTSTANDING piece of original, investigative journalism. I'm sure it took a long time to gather all the info and distill it into a single chart. I understand how much perseverance that requires - you done good! No, good is inadequate...you done fantastic!
