Cheap and Simple: Take a Peek

.
.

September 3, 2009

Technology isn't always about the bells and whistles. Sometimes simplicity is nice too. The Peek is a perfect example.

First released in September 2008, with recent product enhancements and service improvements, the Peek is a mobile, email-only device that doesn't try to do everything.

If you have no interest in using instant messenger, relay or web browsing from a mobile device, this might be the product for you. Or if you have limited financial means, this is worth looking into because it's cheap and doesn't require a contract - perfect for today's economy.

There are two versions of the Peek: the Pronto, which has more options, like instant push email, unlimited texting support, PDF, Microsoft Word, and up to five email accounts. This costs $59.95, with service from $14.99/month. The other option is the Classic, which is basically the same as the 2008 version and has standard email delivery (which takes 2-5 minutes), no unlimited texting support, only two email accounts, and only picture attachments. This only costs $19.95 with service from $14.99/month.

The QWERTY keyboard is small and a pretty decent size. CNET says it's a great keyboard and called it one of the biggest selling points, describing it as being roomy and really easy to type.

The Peek operates on a nationwide wireless network and claims you should always be connected. The display is 2.5 inches and the device weighs 3.8 ounces. It's only .4" thick, 4" long, and 2.7" across. According to the manufacturer, the battery lasts 4-5 days with typical usage.

Ironically, for a device that's fully accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing community, the videos on the company web page are not captioned. Other than this, however, it has gotten good press; among others, it was voted "Favorite Gadget" of 2008 by Wired and is a "2008 Top 10 Gadget of the Year" by Time.

Since it isn't a cell phone, you won't find it in typical stores. If you want to try it in person, check out the locator on their site and look for a store near you. Note that the Pronto is not as easy to find in person as the Classic. However, both models can also be bought online from a number of places, including direct from Peek. Like some cell phone carriers, the company offers a 30-day refund guarantee if you don't like the device.

Feeding your email addiction just got easier.
